ESG Policy

Our Commitment

At Layer Systems, we believe responsible technology businesses have a duty to reduce environmental impact, act ethically, and create positive social outcomes. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles are embedded into how we build our software, operate our business, and support the ICT channel.

We recognise that sustainability is a journey. While there is always more to do, we are proud of the tangible steps we have already taken — and we are committed to continual improvement.

Environmental Responsibility (E)

Sustainable Cloud & Infrastructure Design

As a cloud software provider, infrastructure efficiency is one of our greatest opportunities to reduce environmental impact.

  • We have developed proprietary tooling to detect quieter usage periods (such as weekends and bank holidays) and automatically scale down computing capacity by up to 60% during these times.
  • This approach actively reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions without compromising customer experience or performance.
  • On average, this optimisation reduces capacity for up to 8 days per month, delivering both environmental and operational benefits.

This principle of "only using what is needed" is central to how we design and operate The Layer.

Low-Carbon Ways of Working

  • We operate as a remote-first business, deliberately choosing not to maintain permanent office space. This significantly reduces commuting-related emissions while supporting employee wellbeing.
  • Where in-person collaboration is required, we favour co-working spaces rather than fixed offices.
  • Our company vehicle has been transitioned to electric, and we actively encourage public transport and ride-sharing for work travel.
  • Where air travel is unavoidable, we offset carbon emissions whenever the option is available.

Waste Reduction & Circular Materials

  • We have replaced traditional paper business cards with NFC digital business cards, significantly reducing paper waste while improving post-event follow-up efficiency.
  • At events, we use reusable rPET water bottles rather than single-use plastics.
    • rPET production uses approximately 70% less energy than virgin plastic.
    • Based on just one annual batch, this prevented an estimated 690 single-use plastic bottles from entering landfill.

Social Responsibility (S)

Employee Wellbeing & Engagement

Our people care deeply about sustainability, and their engagement shapes our decisions.

  • We actively seek staff feedback on sustainability initiatives and involve the team in shaping future actions.
  • Internal feedback shows strong support for our remote-first approach, digital alternatives to paper, and infrastructure efficiency initiatives.
  • In an internal sustainability poll, 100% of respondents said they feel proud to work for a company actively trying to be more sustainable, reinforcing that these initiatives positively impact morale and culture

Remote working also enables improved work-life balance, reduced burnout, and access to talent across the UK and abroad, supporting both social equity and inclusion.

Responsible Customer Impact

  • Our platform innovations are designed to help customers operate more efficiently, reducing waste, duplication, and unnecessary manual processes.
  • By lowering our own infrastructure footprint, we also help reduce the indirect environmental impact of the services our customers rely on every day.

Governance (G)

Accountability & Transparency

  • Sustainability initiatives are reviewed as part of operational decision-making, not treated as marketing activity.
  • We prioritise measurable actions over vague commitments and are transparent about where we are today and where improvement is needed.
  • ESG considerations influence decisions across infrastructure, travel, suppliers, and product design.

Continuous Improvement

We acknowledge that this is not the end of our ESG journey. Our commitments will continue to evolve as we:

  • Further optimise infrastructure efficiency
  • Explore additional low-carbon supplier options
  • Reduce event and operational waste
  • Embed sustainability thinking deeper into product development

Looking Ahead

Layer Systems is committed to building software — and a business — that supports long-term environmental responsibility, positive social impact, and strong governance.

We believe that doing the right thing operationally leads to better products, stronger partnerships, and a more sustainable ICT channel.

This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as our practices and impact continue to grow.
