After studying English literature and Sociology (nothing whatsoever to do with tech or business) and gaining a first class honours, my father and I established a telecoms business in Scotland back in 2002. As operations director, I was always seeking ways to improve and scale the business. It was here that the idea of The Layer was born when I recognised the need for tailored software for the industry. When sourcing possible suppliers, I met Nick my co-founder and business partner who just happens to be one of the most talented people I know. Together, we set about creating the Layer; building software solutions focused exclusively on the needs of telecoms & IT companies. By the time I resigned from the telecoms company to focus on Layer Systems, it had grown into a highly profitable, multi-million pound business. Fast forward to today, Layer Systems has a sizeable, loyal customer base, strong market demand for our services and a talented team of 25 people and growing. Our ambitious scaling plans are firmly in motion and we have a very exciting journey ahead of us.

Does spotting talent in others count? Other than making ‘hand crafted’ (odd shaped) pottery and playing piano (badly), none.
